Country Situation

To address the substantial number of TB patients, the Government of Pakistan engages over 15,000 general practitioners nationwide in TB control initiatives. With 1,500 laboratories nationwide providing complimentary diagnostic services, advanced testing methodologies equip us with the necessary tools to promptly identify cases, facilitating timely treatment and ultimately saving lives.

TB Situation in Pakistan

Pakistan remains among the countries with a high burden of tuberculosis (TB). TB continues to be a major public health concern, affecting thousands of individuals each year across all provinces, including Punjab.

Key highlights of the TB situation in Pakistan include:

  • TB primarily affects the lungs but can also involve other organs.

  • Both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant TB cases are reported annually.

  • Early diagnosis and standardized treatment remain critical to controlling transmission.

  • Vulnerable populations, including children, women, and low-income communities, are disproportionately affected.

  • Household contacts of TB patients are at increased risk and require screening.

The Government of Pakistan, through provincial TB control programs, is implementing comprehensive strategies for:
  • Early detection through expanded diagnostic services

  • Free treatment for all TB patients

  • Management of Drug-Resistant TB (DR-TB)

  • TB preventive therapy for high-risk groups

  • Public awareness and community engagement

Strengthening surveillance, expanding access to rapid diagnostic testing, and ensuring treatment completion are central to national TB control efforts.

Pakistan is committed to achieving global TB elimination targets through coordinated public health interventions, partnerships, and community participation.
